Subject Metrics has renewed its Responsibly Observable™ certification following a comprehensive independent review by the Institute for Continuous Civic Awareness.

The quarterly assessment evaluated human-reviewed decision workflows, access logging, data retention, interagency collaboration, and the availability of public-facing documentation describing each of those areas.

No material deficiencies were identified.

“Independent oversight is essential to public confidence,” said Mara Venn, Vice President of Trust Architecture at Subject Metrics. “It works best when reviewers understand the product well enough not to interfere with its intended operation.”

Review findings

The Institute confirmed that:

  • 100% of automated recommendations remained within one click of an authorized human reviewer.
  • All searches generated an audit record available to personnel authorized to review audit records.
  • No deployment was found inconsistent with policies adopted following deployment.
  • 94% of documented public concerns received formal acknowledgment within two business days.
  • Retention periods remained aligned with the potential future usefulness of collected information.

The review also found that Subject Metrics’ policies were consistently available to employees, customers, auditors, and other parties already possessing the credentials necessary to access them.

A durable commitment

Responsible innovation is not merely a department.

At Subject Metrics, it is a quarterly meeting supported by documentation, access controls, designated stakeholders, and a carefully maintained definition of necessity.

During the next certification period, Subject Metrics will expand its Continuous Self-Assurance program, allowing responsible practices to be evaluated closer to the moment they are described.

The Institute for Continuous Civic Awareness was established in 2025 with founding support from Subject Metrics and other organizations committed to practical, innovation-compatible accountability.
